The Long Service Medal for Officers of the Militia was established by Royal Decree on 5 December 1851 to recognise the honourable, long-standing and active service of officers of the Militia. Until 1866, the decoration took the form of a buckle. In that year, its design was changed to a broad-armed cross, worn on an orange ribbon. The decoration is awarded for 15 years’ service. The number of years’ service is indicated in Roman numerals.
