Order of the Oak Crown

The Order of the Oak Crown was established by Grand Ducal decree on 29 December 1841 as an order of merit for the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Between 1841 and 1891, the order was conferred by the King of the Netherlands in his capacity as Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

Initially, the order had four classes: Grand Cross, Knight with Star, Commander and Knight. William III reorganised the order in 1858: the title ‘Knight with Star’ was changed to ‘Grand Officer’, the number of classes was increased to five by creating the class of Officer between the ranks of Commander and Knight, and honorary medals in gold, silver and bronze were introduced.

Since 1891, the Order of the Oak Crown has been the third-highest order in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

William III reorganised the order in 1858: the title ‘Knight with Star’ was changed to ‘Grand Officer’, the number of classes was expanded to five by creating the class of Officer between the ranks of Commander and Knight, and honorary medals in gold, silver and bronze were introduced. Although the order was in fact a Luxembourgish one, in practice it functioned as a house order of the Dutch kings William II and William III. Since the death of King William III in 1890, the Netherlands has had no further connection with the Order of the Oak Crown.
